General FAQ

  ·         What is a Big Bang Challenge?

This is a fanfic/art challenge that seeks to encourage writers to create quality, novella length, new fanfic, as well as to encourage artists to create outstanding art to accompany those fics.  The resulting works are then released together in a big bang.

  ·         Who can participate?

Come one, come all.  We need authors, artists, and betas.  The challenge is LJ based, but feel free to pimp the community at other fiction and art sites.

  ·         What is the timeline?

Aug 27: Writer Sign-Up Period Begins

Sept 15: Writer Sign-Up Period Ends

Oct 1: Beta Sign-Up Begins; Artist Sign-Up Begins

Oct 24: Beta Sign-Up Ends; Artist Sign-Up Ends

Oct 30: Rough Drafts Due to Artists and Betas

Nov 15: Final Pieces (fic, art, vids, etc.) Due

Nov19: Posting Begins

·         How many entries can I submit?  Can I write and create art?

The goal is to create excellent, new, novella length fics to inspire artwork.  So, if you are feeling inspired to write more than one fic, please make sure that the first one you signed up for is complete before beginning a second.  All fics must be complete by November 15th whether you have written one or ten (10,000 word) fics.

You’re arty and wordy?  Yes, by all means, sign up to do both.

·         Will I be reminded of important dates?

Yes.  Watch the community for when deadlines are approaching.  Additionally, there will be weekly posts to help spur creativity and eliminate the cursed writer’s block.

·         I don’t have a LiveJournal account.  Can I still participate?

But of course.  It is easy enough to set up an account, but if you have a preferred location for the posting of fic and art, we will not discriminate.  The only qualification is that you have a location where people can access your work upon posting and provide feedback.

·         This sounds like such fun!  How did you come up with this idea?

I can attest that it will be fun, but I cannot take credit for the concept of a big bang challenge.  Many fandoms have them.  I have taken my inspiration and help devising the FAQs from the xf_bigbang  community.

Writers’ FAQ

  ·         Which Alice in Wonderland are we talking about?

All of them.  If you are inspired by the 2010 Burton Alice in Wonderland, this challenge is for you.  If you want to write something that draws inspiration directly from Carroll’s work, this is the challenge for you too.  Anything from the original works to the more recent incarnations is game.

  ·         Can I write for any pairing I want?

Yes.  We welcome Gen, Het, and Slash, and we are not a strictly Alice/Hatter community challenge.  The only qualifications are that you not write RPF and that any triggers or extremes be noted.

  ·         I have already posted some of my fic or shared bits of it with friends.  Can I still participate?

The short answer: yes.

The long answer:

1.       Please do not sign up with the intention of using a fic of which more than 3,500 words have already been made public.

2.       Please remove or lock down what has already been shared from your fic until the time of the official release.

·         Can my fic be a series of snapshots instead of a traditional novel?

Yes, but there must be some overarching element that would make artistic inspiration for the set as a whole possible.  For example, a series of snapshots might revolve around a theme: Five Times Alice Came to Tea.  In other words, if your contribution lacks a story arc, it must have something to strongly link the chapters/snapshots together.  This might be more manageable for authors who are nervous about creating a 10,000 word novella.  Five snapshots at 2,000 words a piece don’t sound as daunting, now do they?

·         Can I write a crossover?

Absolutely.  Crossovers between different versions of Alice or crossovers with outside fandoms are welcome.  The only qualification is that Wonderland or one of its characters must be the central feature/character of your work.

·         Can I collaborate with another author?

Yes.  Collaborate to your heart’s content.

·         My fic is AU.  Can I still participate?

Yes.  Same rules as crossovers: Wonderland (in whatever form that might take in your AU) or one of its characters must be the central feature/character of your work.

·         Is there a word limit?

Nope!  Write until your fingers or ideas give out.  Your fic must be complete with a beginning, middle, and end, however, by October 30th, when the rough drafts are due.  Artists and betas must have a complete fic to work with at that point.  It is up to you whether that ends up being longer than 10,000 words.

·         Can I post a soundtrack with my fic?

Sounds good to me, and it might help inspire your artist as well.

·         Beta!?!  Why do I need a beta?

To help ensure the overall quality of these fics, all authors must have one or more readers provide beta services.  Each story will be beta read prior to final posting.  Betas can help with plot points, researching, and grammar policing—whatever best suits your needs.  If you like, betas can help with the fic prior to October 30th, but every author must have a beta after that point.  The content of these stories will be secret until they are posted, so your beta(s) will be your only additional set of eyes prior to final posting.

Don’t have a beta?  We have a beta signup just for you.  A post will be made for authors to request beta services and betas to volunteer their help to specific authors.  If some stories have not found betas, the mods will help assign them.

Do you have a beta that you would die if you could not continue to work with him/her.  That’s fine too.  You’ll merely inform us of that fact during signup.

·         How big of a secret must my fic be?

No one will lose their heads, but part of the fun is the anticipation of the release of all the fics at once.  So, feel free to post some teasers, but don’t give away too much plot.

When you signup, we will ask you for some specific information: pairing, Gen/Het/Slash, crossover or not, and whether you have a beta already lined up.  When you submit your rough draft, we will require that you also submit a short summary of your fic to help artists know what it is they’re working with, but it should not give away any major plot twists/details.

Artists’ FAQ

  ·         What are we counting as ‘art’?

This is obviously subjective, but for the purpose of this challenge, we are accepting artists who are willing to create at least one screen sized graphic image or video (coming in at no less than 2:30 minutes) inspired by the fanfiction.

Graphic artwork can be hand drawn, computer generated, Photoshop, or some other process.  It can reflect a pivotal scene from the fic or be more impressionistically inspired by the entirety of the fic.  Artists—should they be inclined—can create multiple pieces of art in a series to accompany the final project; the stupendous example would be a fully illustrated fic.

Icons and banners will not count as the sole graphic artistic contribution, but they are welcome additions if you want to create them to accompany the fic.

Videos can express the story of the fic, reflect on the mood, or respond to a soundtrack that the author may provide.

We will also accept original music compositions and fanmixes with album art.

  ·         Can multiple artists produce work for the same fic prompt?

It would be oh so lovely for each fic to receive oodles of artistic attention, but it is unlikely that there will be enough volunteers to make this possible.  Once all artists have been assigned, the mods will open it up to another round of pairing artists with fics.

  ·         Will the artist tell me what they want to see?

We encourage artists and authors to communicate and inspire each other, but this is not made to order art.  The same goes for the relationship between the artist and the fic: should an artist have a suggestion for the author after reading the rough draft, it will be completely up to the author whether or not to pursue that suggestion.

Betas and Everybody Else’s FAQ

  ·         I don’t have a 10,000 word fic in me at the moment or any artistic talent.  Can I still get in on the fun?

When it comes to tea parties and big bang challenges, the more the merrier.  We need people to give advice to and cheerlead for the authors.  We will also need people to promote this community and the challenge with other communities—shout it from the rooftops, my friends.  Finally, we will need people to enjoy these amazing collaborative works between authors and artists, and they will be released for your consumption at the beginning of December.

OR, would you like to be a beta?  Hmm?

  ·         I want to get a sneak peek at one of these promising fics.  I want to be a beta reader!

These projects are top secret unless you happen to be one of the beta readers—reason enough to volunteer.  Beta signups begin on October 1st and end October 24th.  As a beta reader you might be asked to help with plot, grammar, or research.  You might provide a shoulder to cry on or a kick in the pants.

  ·         Do I need to sign up as a beta if I already agreed to beta my friend Alice Liddell’s fic?

Authors who already have a beta will indicate this upon signup, so you won’t need to signup.  The signup is only for people who want to help out and haven’t already attached themselves to an author.  You can still signup for another fic, but remember that the minimum length of these fics will be 10,000 words.  I might not offer to beta five of these suckers.
